Why Mentoring Matters

Hello my sisters and brothers in Christ!

I pray you and yours are doing well. I am doing awesome, thanks to my good, good Father in Heaven. As a Miss World America 2016 (#MWA2016) national finalist, my Beauty with a Purpose project is "Mentor Leadership: Importance of Mentoring Our Youth." The four goals of my Beauty with a Purpose project are: (1) to encourage today’s youth to reach their full potential and live a purposeful life; (2) to inspire the youth to make wise decisions in school, family, and friendships; (3) to ignite the interests of girls into the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, also known as STEM; (4) and to encourage the youth to grow into the women and men of character and integrity that God created them to be.
Did You Know...
-- 1 in 3 young people will grow up without a mentor.

-- Young Adults Who Were At-Risk for Falling Off Track But Had a Mentor Are:
  • 55% more likely to enroll in college
  • 78% more likely to volunteer regularly
  • 90% are interested in becoming a mentor
  • 130% more likely to hold leadership positions

-- Youth who meet regularly with their mentors are:
  • 46% less likely than their peers to start using illegal drugs
  • 27% less likely to start drinking

-- Young adults who face an opportunity gap but have a mentor are:
  • 81% more likely to participate regularly in sports or extracurricular activities than those who do not

-- Mentors can prepare their mentees for professional careers and assist with their workplace skills by:
  • Helping set career goals and taking the steps to realize them
  • Using personal contacts to help young people network with industry professionals, find internships, and locate possible jobs
  • Introduce young people to resources and organizations they may not be familiar with
  • Skills for seeking a job, interviewing for a job, and keeping a job
