GreenWheaton 5th Anniversary Gala 2016

Hello my sisters and brothers in Christ!

I pray you and yours are doing well. I am doing great, thanks be to God! Yesterday evening, I attended GreenWheaton's 5th Anniversary Gala. This is my second time attending GreenWheaton's gala; I attended their 2015 edition. I became a GreenWheaton volunteer last year and they are an organization that has been very supportive of my adventures. GreenWheaton is an independent, nonpartisan, educational organization seeking to promote collaboration between Wheaton residents, businesses and the community at large while providing environmental education and outreach for all members of the community. It is one of the four "Green" organizations in Montgomery County (Maryland); others include: Bethesda, Poolesville, and Silver Spring.
Miss World America 2016 National Finalist - Ruby B. Johnson
Through GreenWheaton, I got blessed with a mentor, who's also one of the founding members, Ed Murtagh (seen in photo below). Ed has been supportive of my many ambitions in the past year and even led me towards my prospective employment. He's one of the many people looking forward to cheering for me at Miss World America 2016 on July 8th at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center. Over the past year, it has been wonderful to get to know him and his lovely wife. Folks like Ed are the reason why I am passionate about mentoring and its impact on the youth.
The Gala celebrated GreenWheaton's successes in five years of non-profit educational work and green initiatives in the Wheaton community, and serves as a fundraiser for their continuing efforts of living and working "green" into the future. Being a foodie, I appreciated the delicious food provided by Hollywood East Cafe, Limerick Pub, Green Plate Catering and Los Chorros. There was a raffle ticket drawing at the Gala and although I didn't purchase a raffle ticket (I never win these things), I did leave with a prize of 8 yoga sessions; Ed initially won this prize but gave it to me since him and his wife don't do yoga. How kind is he? In addition to seeing Ed, it was nice seeing some familiar faces and getting to meet new people. Meeting and getting to know folks like Dorianne, seen in photo below; she's a musician and yoga instructor. How awesome that I got to make a new friend! Overall, I had a great time at the event. Congratulations to Miss Wendy (GW Director) and her entire team for another successful gala.
For all people walk each in the name of his god, But we will walk in the name of the Lord our God Forever and ever. Micah 4:5

Miss World America 2016 - Beauty with a Purpose Video

Hello my sisters and brothers in Christ!

I pray you and yours are doing well. I am doing great, to God be the glory. I had a wonderful evening with my Bible study family (Care Group). Rather than sharing the Word among each other like we usually do on Wednesday evenings, we went out into the community and evangelized, sharing God's love for all. Our Father was truly glorified. So that got me on a Jesus high this evening. Additionally, I just found out that the Miss World America 2016 Beauty with a Purpose videos are now published on YouTube. View mine below and get to know me more.
Please share this video on your social media networks.

REMINDER - I'll be taking charge of the Mac Duggal SnapChat account TOMORROW, June 23rd from 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m EST. I'll be answering questions viewers send in via SnapChat during my takeover; so start thinking about your questions. I'm excited about this because the SnapChat takeover is a great opportunity to take viewers into a day in my life, and allows them to get to know me better.  Make sure you follow @MacDuggal on SnapChat now and get to know the phenomenal women vying for the Miss World America title next month at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center at the National Harbor.

God bless you.

Miss World Queens

Hello my sisters and brothers in Christ!

I pray you and yours are doing well. I am blessed and highly favored, thanks to my Father in Heaven! As you already know from my previous posts, I will be competing next month for the title of Miss World America and the opportunity to represent the United States at Miss World 2016 (#MWA2016). In this post, I want to share some tidbits about the reigning Miss World queen as well as few past queens. The reigning Miss World 2015 is the beautiful Mireia Lalaguna from Spain.
The first American woman to win Miss World is Marjorie Wallace from Indiana in 1973. The first woman I got to know of that is a former Miss World is Aishwarya Rai Bachchan from watching lots of Bollywood movies in high school; she is Miss World 1994. She's a great actress today, who used her year of service as Miss World doing awesome charity work worldwide with Mrs. Julia Morley. I absolutely adore her, and her husband Abhishek is one of my favorite actors, especially when paired with my favorite Bollywood actress (Rani Mukherji). I thought the tribute Aish received at the 2014 Miss World pageant on her 20th anniversary was very deserving.
Miss World 1994 Aishwarya Rai from India
In recent years, the Miss World I've had the pleasure to follow her journey (via social media) is Miss World 2014 Rolene Strauss from South Africa. I started following her journey to the Miss World stage since she was a national finalist for Miss South Africa 2014 through the end of her reign as Miss World. Through social media, I saw how compassionate and smart she is, and how she truly is a beauty with a purpose. She represented her country, South Africa, so well, and shared love and hope throughout her reign worldwide. She is definitely a woman that young girls admire and would want to be, which is what the icon Miss World is. Another favorite former Miss World of mine is Agbani Darego, who was Miss World 2001. Funny story, I actually dressed up as her for Halloween 2013; making the sash out of a ribbon, wearing a similar green dress to what she won in, and wearing a plastic blue crown. Few months later, I discovered that she actually reposted that photo of me dressed as her on her Instagram account. I pray that just as how these women's dreams came true, I will be one step closer to mine next month at Miss World America 2016. In Christ name, Amen! Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!” Luke 1:45.

The Longest Day - Summer Solstice 2016

Hello my sisters and brothers in Christ!

I pray you and yours are doing well. I have been doing awesome, to God be the glory! Did you know that yesterday (Monday, June 20th) was the longest day in 2016? Known as the summer solstice, it is the longest day of 2016 for anyone living north of the equator. This year’s even includes a"strawberry moon," the first time that’s happened since 1967. So between March and September, Earth’s Northern Hemisphere gets more exposure to direct sunlight over the course of a day. The rest of the year, the Southern Hemisphere gets more. It’s the reason for the seasons. In the Northern Hemisphere, "peak" sunlight usually occurs on June 20, 21, or 22 of any given year. That’s the summer solstice. By contrast, the Southern Hemisphere reaches peak sunlight on December 21, 22, or 23 and the north hits peak darkness — that’s our winter solstice. Technically speaking, the summer solstice occurs when the sun is directly overhead the Tropic of Cancer, or 23.5° north latitude. According to the Old Farmers’ Almanac, full moons in June were traditionally referred to as "strawberry moons" by Native Americans, because that was the month strawberries were picked. In Europe, where strawberries aren’t native, full moons in June were known as "honey moons" or "full rose moons." (Vox).
Miss World America 2016 National Finalist - Ruby B. Johnson
Although I did not commemorate the longest day in any special way, I did have a packed and adventurous day. Earlier in the day, I volunteered at the USO Warrior and Family Center for my 6 a.m. shift; afterwards I spent some hours praying, meditating, and watching the news to stay updated on current events; mid-afternoon, I went on a hike with a couple friends at Great Falls Park in Potomac, Maryland; later in the evening, I went to see "Finding Dory" with a close friend from my high school years. "Finding Nemo" has always been one of my favorite movies since it came out in 2003, and the sequel definitely was worth waiting for 13 years later; it was nice catching up with my friend and what she has been up to.
Hiking is one of my favorite things to do, and I enjoy outdoor activities and doing things in nature. Hiking at the Great Falls Park, the Maryland side, is absolutely wonderful. The sight is beautiful, and this mining engineer definitely gets excited by the big rocks.
Something new I learned yesterday was how the Alzheimer's community commemorates the summer solstice. While watching Good Day DC, there was a phone bank set up whereby viewers can call in and ask questions about this disease. I learned so much from watching this segment throughout the show. According to the Alzheimer's Association, "The Longest Day is a team event to raise funds and awareness for the Alzheimer's Association®. Held annually on the summer solstice, the duration of this sunrise-to-sunset event symbolizes the challenging journey of those living with the disease and their caregivers. Teams are encouraged to create their own experience as they fundraise and participate in an activity they love to honor someone facing the disease." (SOURCE). Hearing how much Alzheimer's affects families, friends, and caregivers really made me realize how every moment matters with our loved ones. How heartbreaking it will be if there is a time whereby my sweet grandmothers will not remember me. We must cherish the times we have now with the ones we love because we don't know what may happen tomorrow. God wants us to live life in abundance and we must be thankful for His favor in the times we get to spend with our loved ones. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. John 10:10.
REMINDER - I'll be taking charge of the Mac Duggal SnapChat account Thursday, June 23rd from 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m EST. Relevance of Mentoring

Hello my sisters and brothers in Christ!

I pray you and yours are doing well. I am doing great, praise be to God. As I mentioned last week, I am a national finalist for Miss World America 2016 (#MWA2016) and will be competing for the title next month at the National Harbor in Maryland. My Beauty with a Purpose project is "Mentor Leadership: Importance of Mentoring Our Youth." My goals with this BWAP project include: (1) encourage today's youth to reach their full potential and live a purposeful life; (2) inspire the youth to make wise decisions in school, family, and friendships; (3) ignite or increase the interest of girls in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields; (4) and encourage the youth to grow into the women and men of character and integrity that God created them to be.

Below are a few quotes on mentoring, talking about its relevance:
“The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.”
-- William Arthur Ward

“Leaders..should influence others..in such a way that it builds people up, encourages and edifies them so they can duplicate this attitude in others.”
-- Bob Goshen

“We must never forget our teachers, our lecturers and our mentors. In their individual capacities have contributed to our academic, professional and personal development.”
-- Lailah Gifty Akita

“Every great athlete, artist and aspiring being has a great team to help them flourish and succeed - personally and professionally. Even the so-called 'solo star' has a strong supporting cast helping them shine, thrive and take flight.”
-- Rasheed Ogunlaru

“I think the most important quality of a mentor is that they are open to following students where they want to go. Not always pushing their own agenda.”
-- Cordelia Jensen

"And so, lifting as we climb, onward and upward we go, struggling and striving, and hoping that the buds and blossoms of our desires will burst into glorious fruition ere long. With courage, born of success achieved in the past, with a keen sense of the responsibility which we shall continue to assume, we look forward to a future large with promise and hope."
-- Mary Church Terrell.

Restored Relationship - Father's Day 2016

Hello my sisters and brothers in Christ!

I pray you and yours are doing well. I am doing well, thanks to our awesome Daddy in Heaven. Well tomorrow is Father's Day, a day whereby earthly fathers are honored and celebrated! Having been raised by my mother since age 12 after coming to the United States, I have never really paid much attention to this day. I have always prioritized Mother's Day for obvious reasons, but I would in the past acknowledge the men in my life that have been father-figures to me in the United States. I am the embodiment of "it takes a village to raise a child." Being that my dad and I have been apart from each other most of my life (different countries or continents), we have had a staggering relationship. My grandmother was my primary guardian prior to moving to the United States; however, when I was 6 and lived in Nigeria, I got to be with my dad for the years I spent there. When I was younger, I was blessed to have uncles who collectively raised me and stepped into father roles, so I was not bothered by the physical absence of my biological dad. However, as I got older I realized that something was missing.
As loving as my mother is, caring as my brother is, uncles willing to be there for me, men mentors guiding me, no one could ever fill that space of my dad. In my late teen years through my early 20s, there was a sad part of me that wished my dad could be there for me. Even though I spoke to him on the phone and my family repeatedly emphasized my dad's love for me, I never felt this love. It saddened me that my sisters (different mother) had the privilege of growing up all their life with him and I never had that. Although I felt this way, I never made effort to change this and just tried to live content with this; keyword is tried. But I thank God that my dad did make the effort. God made it possible that he was able to come to my college graduation and that is when God started restoring our relationship. Additionally, God made it possible for me to return to Nigeria after 15 years last December few days before Christmas and spent about 3 weeks with my dad, stepmom, and two younger sisters. During this time, our relationship was mended and God truly proved that He is sovereign. I believe that my salvation played a big role in restoring our relationship; prior to rededicating my life to Christ, I had a veil over my face that didn't show me what a wonderful father I have, a man that is loving and caring. He is a man who loves the Lord, and I truly believe that his prayers covered me during the times I backslid.
Over the past year, God has been restoring our relationship and this Father's Day is extra special to me because that void is no longer there; I am filled with love from my Father in Heaven and my father on earth. To God be the glory. But from everlasting to everlasting the Lord’s love is with those who fear him, and his righteousness with their children’s children. Psalm 103:17. Although my dad is still not physically present in my life, he's still part of my life. He has been instrumental in my life decisions and I sought counsel from him just as I do with my mom. I have also noticed that since my relationship with my dad got better, I have become wise about the decisions I make regarding friendships with men and courting. Interestingly, even when my relationship with my dad was rocky, I always saw him as an awesome man and desired that my future husband will share similar characteristics with him; i.e. a man who loves the Lord, strong leader, and full of wisdom. Although I physically look like my mama, I see everyday how similar my personality is like my dad; he is adventurous, loves being busy, loves solving problems, and like my mom always points out - my prayers are long just like his.
If you are a father, father-figure, or mentor reading this, please use wisdom and love to serve in this important role God has put you in. The way you treat your daughters and sons matter; teach your sons to be leaders and how to treat women. Shower your daughters with lots of love and tell them to be confident in who they are. If you show them less than, then your daughters will settle for less; of course the way you treat your wives and mothers of your children matter as well. For many years, my dad always called me on my birthday and sang the birthday song for me; I would usually chuckle on the phone while he's singing, but something like that means a lot to me. It may seem corny to some, but I love that my dad calls me princess even at 25. Even when I wasn't responsive to my dad in past situations, I'm glad that he never gave up on us. I look forward to seeing him cheer for me at Miss World America next month; the first pageant he'll get to watch me participate in live. He's already in full "pageant dad" mode and has been involved in everything in this journey - from praying with me about the decision to compete, going over my speech, reviewing my Beauty with a Purpose video, and much more. Words and actions matter. I am so thankful to God that as I grow older, my salvation has improved my relationship with my mom and dad. I love having a compassionate nurse for a mom, and I am proud to be a DD (Deacon's Daughter) with my dad answering God's call for his life.
Men, allow the Holy Spirit to guide you and ask God to teach you how to be a father. If you are someone whose earthly father has gone on to eternity, my prayer for you is that you abound in God's love for you. He is a good, good Father. You can be blessed with father-figures and mentors in your life but only God can fill that space of your earthly father, not a boyfriend, husband, or male friend. Absent fathers or those with absent fathers, ask God to restore your relationship with them and what necessary steps you can take towards that healing. Ask God to teach you how to forgive and to get rid of bitterness and resentment. May the Lord restore your peace and joy in the relationship. I will be a Father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty. 2 Corinthians 6:18.
HAPPY FATHER'S DAY!!!

God bless you.
Jesus loves you.
