Ruby Mountain Hike

Hello my sisters and brothers in Christ!

I pray you and yours are doing well. I have been doing well - thanks be to God. A couple months, I went on a beautiful hike on the Talbott Trail at the Ruby Mountains with my friend, right before it got covered with snow in early November. It was a beautiful Sunday and a gorgeous view from up the Rubies to enjoy God's creation.

My 1-Year ElkoVersary

Hello my sisters and brothers in Christ!

I pray you and yours are doing well. I am doing awesome, to God be the glory. A year ago on this day, I got in a plane from Maryland and moved to a small town in northeast Nevada called Elko, after accepting a job position. With God's grace, I have had an amazing year in my career and growing as a mining engineer and God has blessed me with amazing people in this town and beyond - through friendships, work, church, and community. During this year, I started gardening, became a wildland firefighter and resource advisor, ran my first relay, went ice fishing, serving as a leader in my church's kids and teens ministries as well as worship ministry, volunteered and attended Elko's Cowboy Poetry Gathering as well as the Annual Mine Expo, attended the Ruby Mountain Balloon festival, basque festival, and Elko County Fair. I have learned that there's more to Nevada than Las Vegas, and of course hike my namesake mountain range - Ruby Mountains - and so much more! Elko has been so good to me and I am happy to call it home.

My coworker, supervisor, and mentor
Attending Horizon Hospice's 11th Annual "Community Souper Bowl" in April. This annual fundraiser features endless servings of donated soups served, along with artist-created bowls. I believe I had about 15 different types of soups and they were delicious! Horizon Hospice is a non-profit, all-volunteer hospice providing a team of specially trained volunteers on call 24-hours a day. Horizon Hospice can provide pain medications, equipment and supplies, instructions in caregiving to help loved ones care for the patient, respite services, comfort care therapies such as music, art and essential oils, and bereavement support for surviving family members. The organization also operates Horizon Center, offering peer grief support groups for children, teens and adults. Hearing the story of folks that have been blessed with their services as well as the work the people of the Hospice does. It makes me so proud to be part of the community in this little ol' town of Elko which I call home.
Being prayed over by my coverings at the church God has planted me in in Elko. I am blessed to be part of Living Stones. And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love. Ephesians‬ ‭4:11-16‬
Sometime in May I got to speak to some Cub Scouts at the Spring Creek Fire Station for their den meeting. Each week, the group has someone present on a certain career and the boys do a project on the career or speciality, part of their Webelos handbook. My co-worker, who's a firefighter, asked me to come and talk about what an engineer does as well as what exactly is a mining engineer. Being that Elko is a mining town, these kids know what mining is and have family members and/or neighbors working in the mines. My goal was to take them into the life of a mining engineer as well as the stages of mining and it's relevance in everyday life. The boys (and their dads/grandpa) had so many great questions and were really engaged throughout the presentation, which made it all the way enjoyable for me! It was pretty cool to have one of the sisters of a Cub Scout join us, little Miss Bella, and she was so into it too like the boys! I'm all about getting them when they're young, so hopefully I may have convinced a 9/10-year-old to become a mining engineer when he grows up as well as show Bella that girls can be engineers too and get to play with explosives!

Godly Lessons - Firefighting and Spiritual Walk

Hello my sisters and brothers in Christ!

I pray you and yours are doing well. I have been really busy but thankful to God for His favor and grace. This week I took the wildland fire rookie school, taught by experienced and diligent firefighters. I am so thankful to God to be working for such an awesome agency like the US Forest Service and having great opportunities like this in addition to growing professionally as a mining engineer. The first 4 days was a mix of classwork and field work exercises; the final day was a full day on the field: hiking uphill and downhill at a fast pace with our 20-25-lb packs on, from constructing a fireline to performing rehab on a fireline, and all other protocols done on a real fire incident. After this full week of rookie school, I have to do and pass the pack test, and I can be able to join a crew to go fight fires during fire seasons. I have always respected and admired firefighters but this week, I gained a whole new level of respect for the men and women who put their lives in danger to fight wildland and urban fires across our country being that I was literally in their boots. In this current season of my life, it is my desire to grow spiritually as a child of God and see the lessons God is teaching in my everyday life. This week of training taught me a lot about firefighting but also some things about myself that I believe can align with our walk with Christ and maturity in the faith.
Lesson 1 - God Has Equipped Us For Trials
This week I realized that being a firefighter takes a lot of grit and push through. I don't think I have ever pushed my body physically this much in my whole lifetime like I did this week. For Friday's field day, there were few moments I felt I couldn't keep going but with determination and encouragement from the guys on my squad, I persevered and fully participated till the end. The moments I struggled hiking uphill or constructing the fireline, my squadees would tell me "it's all mental and your body can handle more than you think" as well as "you got this, Ruby!" They were right! Their encouragement and my determination to complete all tasks helped me push through and I was pleasantly surprised at my endurance and how much my body can handle; through the grace of God, I did not have any health emergency even though there were moments I thought I would by the end of the day. So how does this apply to our spiritual walk? Well it says in Ephesians 4:11-13, Jesus gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ. As Christians, God has equipped us for whatever He has called us to. We may see ourselves as unqualified but sometimes God calls the unqualified so He can get the glory. For instance, I could have seen myself as unfit to be a firefighter because there aren't many women doing it, especially a woman that is 5'2" tall and small as I am. So in our walk with Christ, we must remember that whatever trials and setbacks come our way, as long as we hold firm to the Word of God and His promises, we will prevail. We must remember that we serve a mighty God, we are His beloved, and we are fighting from a place of victory. There are so many scriptures in the Bible that remind us to be fearless, God will not forsake us, and he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ (Philippians 1:6). The screensaver on my cellphone currently says "Let your faith be bigger than your fears." If we are going to declare God as the King of our hearts and Jesus is our Lord and Savior, we must fully rely on Him and not underestimate His ability and the work He is doing in us. Even when we come close to giving up, DO NOT GIVE UP. We are equipped and can persevere through whatever season in life we are in, so Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful (Hebrews 10:23).
Lesson 2 - Be Fed By The Word Constantly
Earlier in the week, the instructors emphasized on the importance on staying hydrated on the job. Nutrition and hydration are key with a job like firefighting. Working on a hill in a canyon in high desert northeast Nevada like we did yesterday for field day comes with a lot of elements for the body to handle. The temperature ranged from 75-90 degrees yesterday while we were out there. We had to hike and work uphill and downhill. It made me understand why the fire guys stressed so much on drinking water earlier in the week. While we were out there, the moment I looked forward to the most was when our squad boss would give us quick water breaks. On a regular day, I drink water often but I have never desired water so badly as I did yesterday. With our packs, we can carry a minimum of 4 canteens and most of us in the crew finished at least 2 during our exercise outside. In our spiritual walk as Christians, it is important that we are constantly fed with the Word of God by reading our Bibles, as well as listening to sermons at home and at church. As it says in Matthew 4:4, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” It is imperative that we are equipped with God's Word: know who we are in Christ, what we can do in the name of Jesus, and be sanctified through and through by continually being fed with the Word of God and have it stamped in our heart. Two members of our crew had to return to the rigs and not participate in our field exercise - the reason why one of them had to do this was because he forgot to fill up his canteens with water. So upon being up on the hill digging the fireline, he became dehydrated 2 hours later and had no water to drink. Someone in his squad could have given some of theirs to drink but that person needs to drink water just as much also. We need to have a personal relationship with God and not through our family or friends. I consider the Bible to be the manual to life and believe it is a guide to not just living a life that honors God but also builds up our spirit man. Going to church every Sunday and serving in ministry are wonderful, but those moments in the week that we commune with God in our rooms or convene with our sisters and brothers in Christ reading God's Word are oh so crucial. In this walk with Christ, it is God's will that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; being strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy; giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light (Colossians 1:9-12).
Lesson 3- Be Equipped For The Battle
There are different kinds of fitness: healthy living fitness, pageant fitness, marathon fitness, military fitness, etc. There is also firefighting fitness. So how does this apply to our spiritual walk? Well Apostle Paul says in Ephesians 6:10-13, Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Therefore, we have to be equipped the right way for every battle that comes our way. If I want to be an efficient wildland firefighter this fire season and be a contributing member in my squad, I have to train my body the right way. I can't train the way I did for when I competed in pageants but I would focus on all muscle groups that will make me physically fit to carry my 30-lb+ pack and tool for long hours, hiking on various terrains, and digging a fireline. I will focus on hiking uphill and downhill with weights and not just rely on running on a treadmill and doing crunches at the gym. In our spiritual walk, we mustn't rely on blaming people for the shortcomings that come our way but attack the real enemy, the devil, and use the right tools: prayer and the Word of God. I know the importance of getting on my face in my war room and praying specifically, as well as the relevance of studying God's Word: the Bible. So when the enemy comes for me or those I love, I am in full attack mode with prayer and saying out loud or in my heart the scriptures that declare the power of my Father in Heaven.

God bless you.
Jesus loves you.

National Trails Day 2017

Hello my sisters and brothers in Christ!

I pray you and yours are doing well. I am doing well, thanks to my awesome Father in Heaven. Today commemorates National Trails Day. Organized by the Friends of Ruby Mountains and U.S. Forest Service, this morning I participated in a trail cleanup for Talbott Creek Trail; this is a popular hiking, biking, and equestrian trail in Lamoille Canyon. Other volunteers and myself worked on brush, cleaning water bars, etc. along the trail.
I learned a lot of basic trail maintenance techniques and using the tools with the crew. It was a beautiful, sunny day to be outdoors. Trails Days is celebrated each year on the first Saturday in June. Events held throughout the United States help promote awareness of the wide variety of benefits that trails provide, encourage people to discover their local trails, raise awareness of trail issues and instill excitement for the outdoors.
Besides hiking, trails provide access to waterways for canoeing and paddle trips. Birdwatching and geocaching are some other favorite activities. Learning land navigation or biking are also great trail pursuits. It was a beautiful, sun shiny day to be outdoors today.
Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. Yours is the kingdom, O Lord, and you are exalted as head above all.

God's Creation - Lamoille Canyon

Hello my sisters and brothers in Christ!

I pray you and yours are doing well. I am doing well, thanks to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. A few weeks ago, I went hiking at Lamoille Canyon. I hadn't been there since last Fall. Since we were hit pretty hard with snow this winter in northeast Nevada, some parts of the Ruby Mountains still have snow and other areas have beautiful waterfalls as a result of the snow melting. It was a beautiful Monday for hiking and I had a great time. Due to the fact that there's still a lot of snow on the roads, I couldn't go all the way to the top of the Canyon or even drive to it - had to walk about a mile before turning back to where my car was parked. There were a couple snowmobilers making the most out of the snow on the roads. As the months go by, I look forward to actually hiking the Ruby Mountains and enjoying the beauty of the mountain range that I share a name with.
And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.
Philippians 1:6

Godly Lessons - Overcoming Fear

Hello my sisters and brothers in Christ!

I pray you and yours are doing well. I am doing awesome, thanks to my Father in Heaven. Yesterday evening I went hiking and had a great time. Although it has been ridiculously hot lately, I'm happy that I could get out and enjoy mother nature during the time the sun was about to set in the day. Staying hydrated was key during this hike. This hike was memorable because I did something I have never done before - I climbed a rock! Hiking is not new to me and neither is rock climbing but these two have never been combined; I have hiked mountains/trails by walking and running, and my rock climbing experience is usually indoors, attached to a rope and/or having the comfort of a recreational mat at the bottom of the rock.
Today was not my first time hiking at this site but taking this path was a first. Previously, we took the walking path on the route but today my friend suggested we actually climb the rock on that path because there was a lot of human traffic on the walking route and that could have slowed us down. Taking this new route on the rock meant that we had to use our hands and feet to get to the top. Of course my friend quickly climbed and got to the top before me, and then he encouraged I climb as well. I was terrified! At this moment, my mind was racing with so many thoughts - my fear of heights, the slipperiness of the rock, breaking some part of my body from falling off a 60+ feet rock, my lack of swimming skills, and of course falling down into the Potomac river. Basically, I was overwhelmed with fear. Being the adventurous person I am, I was up for the challenge but as I clinched on to the rock with my fingers and placed my feet on it, I started to feel unqualified to overcome this challenge. Being that my friend had reached to the top, he was coaching me through the climbing process but I had doubts about continuing and came close to crying a few times. Funnily, I rarely break a sweat but after conquering that rock, my friend pointed out that I was sweating profusely, which was a first for him to see; just goes to show that I was terrified! I was also teased for being a mining engineer who deals with rocks but afraid of climbing a rock.
This rock climbing experience I share shows how sometimes God puts us in situations that terrify us and is asking us to just trust Him because He will see us through. God being sovereign already knows the outcome of every situation in our life. Like it says in Romans 11:33, God knows all things past, present, and future. There is no limit to His knowledge, for God knows everything completely before it even happens. In this situation, my friend being at the top of the mountain had a great view and could coach me on how to climb to the top. Being at the top, he could see where I can put my hands and feet when climbing. He had gotten to the top, so he knew that it could be done. This is how God works. God has already written our life story. He knows what we can accomplish. We may see ourselves as unqualified, but just like how my friend believed in me and he continuously encouraged me to not give up climbing that rock, that is how God sees us as qualified for a task. While I was freaking out and my friend was giving me guidelines about climbing the rock, another hiker who was at the top made the statement that my only obstacle now is fear. As Christians we are fully equipped to perform a task but we become overwhelmed with fear and sell ourselves short. Like it says in 2 Timothy 1:7, For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. Therefore, we have no reason to be fearful but approach obstacles from a position of victory.

One of the remarkable things about this experience is that my friend believed in me more than I believed in myself. He continually encouraged me to keep going and not turn back; he had faith in me that I could climb to the top of that rock. It's amazing that sometimes we have folks who believe in us more than we believe in ourselves. This goes back to how we may see ourselves as unqualified for a task but God fully believes in us and knows that we can excel in that task. We must have faith in God because He has faith in us. His strength keeps us going when we are weak and feel unfit. Like it says in 2 Corinthians 12:9-10, And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ’s sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
After I climbed that rock and got to the top of that mountain, I was so elated! That moment became the highlight of my day and I skipped through the rest of the hike. Being the type of person that loves to be challenged, I definitely saw this as one for the books. Once again, God teaches me a lesson in an unconventional way - the lesson of trust. Relying on my friend's guidance as I climbed that rock showed that I trusted him - I trusted his judgment. In this same way, I learn that I have to trust God at all times. I am not omniscient like He is and do not need to be in control at all times. Being the type of person that likes to be in control in situations of my life, I struggle with trust and letting go. But as I grow in faith, I come to acknowledge that the reason why I like being in control is because of my fear of outcomes or what the future holds. God says Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9. Knowing this, I pray that I am constantly reminded that God is in control, therefore I have no reason to live in fear. How great it is to know that we serve a good, good Father who has overcome fear for us and is with us at all times. God has equipped us for every endeavor we embark on. As He says in Isaiah 41;10, Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.

God bless you.
Jesus loves you.
